And Hansen figures that, rather than reintroducing Gremlin with something heavy, audiences are ready to laugh this summer.
Playwright Marc Camoletti’s profile has gotten a boost from recent Broadway runs of “Don’t Dress for Dinner” and “Boeing-Boeing” (Minneapolis’ Torch Theater had a big hit with “Boeing” two years ago). There’s symmetry in starting the 20th season of Gremlin with the same play that kicked off its first season. Those reasons? It has a small cast, so it’s manageable. Olaf graduates who was in on the founding of Gremlin. “There were basically a bunch of reasons this play seemed like the obvious choice,” says Hansen, one of four St. Paul home since Gremlin closed its previous venue four years ago, are back for an encore. Gremlin Theatre opens its 120-seat home at the artsy Vandalia Tower complex with the farce “Don’t Dress for Dinner,” which also was the first play the company did back in 1998. Gremlin is debuting its brand-new theater Friday, July 7, but some things will look familiar to longtime fans.
